Encourage kids into the library for reading, writing, learning and exploring with these inspiring ideas for creating a positive learning environment.

With more focus than ever on the need to increase standards of education, the pressure is falling to libraries to provide a learning hub within the school, inspiring and enthusing pupils in their work.

It is vitally important to create a modern, exciting space that encourages children to use the library, not only for reading, but for the whole curriculum.

Designing a Modern Library

If your library is looking old, it is time for a makeover! An overhaul of design should consider:

  • Colour – use bright and exciting shades, especially when aimed at younger pupils
  • Layout – combine easy-to-reach shelving with modern freestanding units, bookcases and snazzy displays
  • Areas – provide different sections, such as quiet study areas and more informal shared reading areas
  • Furniture – balance desk areas with comfy chairs, sofas or even beanbags for relaxed reading
  • Space - remember to leave plenty of access room for disabled students, and position shelving and furniture so that you can keep an eye on all areas

Stocking the School Library with the Best Books for Children

Children are far more likely to read library books if they are clean, relevant and have eye-catching covers or blurbs. No matter how good a book is, if it has a faded or boring cover, it is unlikely to go out on loan.

  • Update old books with newer versions
  • Have a mix of classics and modern fiction, and a wide range of genres to suit all tastes
  • Encourage boys to read with sport, adventure or fantasy books
  • Rotate displays to promote different types of books
  • Include a reluctant reader’s section with easy-to-read books
  • Consider other types of reading material such as comics, graphic novels and magazines
  • Make use of popular TV shows, films and music with tie-in books
  • Include audio books as an alternative for those who struggle with reading

Using Technology in the Library

Many libraries are now combined with computer areas. If you are worried about technology taking over from books, don’t despair; make them work in harmony!

  • Ask departments to set homework that requires book research as well as Internet research
  • Combine books and computers by getting pupils to write book reviews online, or research their favourite authors
  • Keep computer areas for schoolwork or book-related activities only
  • Set up a website, blog or social network for the school library

Ideas for Exciting Activities in the School Library

The more innovative and exciting you make the library, the more likely it is to be used! Promote reading with fun ideas such as:

  • Author visits
  • Competitions
  • Treasure Hunts
  • Book Fairs
  • Events such as World Book Day
  • Quizzes based on popular shows
  • Themed days based on books, TV shows or films

Creating Effective Library Links with Departments

Working closely with the departments within the school is invaluable in providing an effective library service.

  • Find out the curriculum for each year so that new books can be purchased in time
  • Plan activities that combine the subject with the library
  • Keep stock up to date for each department
  • Provide book boxes on certain topics
  • Invite teachers to conduct lessons in the library

Being a successful school librarian with a popular library takes dedication, vision and a passion for sharing reading and learning with others. By creating a modern and positive learning space that children enjoy spending time in, librarians can truly make a difference in the way they teach and inspire.
