Health, Safety and Environmental Issues is the All Aspects of the Industry aspect that provides educators guidelines to teach students about safety laws and practices.
The Health, Safety and Environmental Issues aspect of the All Aspects of the Industry guidelines is designed to expose students entering industry based careers about the laws and practices that affect employees, surrounding community and environment. The Health, Safety and Environmental Issues aspect does not promote training for a specific career; instead it gives a framework for students to learn how an industry operates. Specifically, this introduces students to how an industry addresses the health, safety and environment in relation to its employees and community. This specifically includes the laws and regulatory agencies involved. Also included is the understanding of what the concerns are on a business and industry level. Potential TopicsHealth, Safety and Environmental Issues can be explained as workplace safety issues. This includes what industry practices and which laws might affect the safety or health of the employees. It also addresses the effects the business or industry might have on the environment both within a specific business and on the surrounding community. Some potential topics for this aspect include:
ImplementingProject based and teamwork skills are ideal for including the Health, Safety and Environmental Issues aspect in the curriculum. These projects can be individualized or used as group projects. Students should be exposed to a variety of scenarios; consider using a case study or a specific scenario and having students create a final product to demonstrate understanding. A field trip could also provide students with the opportunity to tour a business and speak with professionals about how that business ensures the safety and health of its employees and how it ensures that its practices are environmentally friendly. Some questions might include what precautions are taken to make sure the parking lot is safe at night, what recycling procedures are in place, what education and benefits are provided for employees to improve their health or workplace environment or what safety or health rules are in place within the business or industry.
